Note: The figure illustrates the development of consumer spending (debit & credit cards, mobile payments and ATM withdrawals) in 2020 (light gray), 2021 (dark gray) and 2022 (red). The data are aggregated on a weekly basis (see stair pattern). The first (spring 2020) and second (spring 2021) lockdowns are marked with shading. We display the data as provided, i.e., as a scaled value, which cannot be interpreted in its own right but which preserves the relative interpretability both over time and in the cross-section. See Sect. 2 for the details on the scaling.
